June 27th

We started north of Lakeview off highway 395 just down county Rd 14.  The trails through that portion of the forest were mostly good condition gravel or hard packed dirt.  We left Lakeview at 9:30 after giving an interview to a journalist for the local newspaper.

We used two Lowrance GPS units and they were flawless.  I estimate we must have passed a few hundred intersections in the middle of no where and many were not marked.  I followed the route we had picked out and only had to change once.  On that portion of the trail, there were lots of fallen trees that had not been removed and after about a half hour of trying to go around trees or pull them out of the way with our WARN winch, we decided to back track a bit and hit another major forest road.

One thing we did discover is that the forest roads actual numbers are not the same as the numbers shown on many available maps.  That is why the GPS was so important.

We arrived at highway 31 north of Summer Lake a few hours ahead of schedule, I think around 3:00.  Then the fun began.  We crossed the highway and started down a BLM road and within a half hour the road just disappeared.  It showed a road on numerous maps, but there was not any.  So for the next two hours we had to travel around 2 miles per hour going over terrible rock and sage brush.  We could see a high line a few miles ahead and when we finally got there, we found a two lane maintenance road and followed that to the edge of Summer Lake.

The only issue for the day was two holes in a tire and I’m surprised we didn’t have five holes in all of the tires.  The Arctic Cat ran great and I averaged 20 miles per gallon.

That’s it for the day, I’m tired, dirty, exhausted.  I didn’t need my long underwear as it was 95 most of the day.  We traveled 138 miles today so have only about 4,862 more to go.  Piece of cake I’d say!!!!
