Day 6

We left little town of Lucile, Idaho and headed to the Oregon/Idaho border along the Snake River Canyon.  We did this so we could say we once again went across the entire state of Idaho.

We stayed in Riggins for the night and then trailered to Lucile, Idaho for the start of the trip.  We went west out of Lucile on a road called Cow Creek Rd to the top of a summit in Nez Perce National Forest.  From there we continued on FR420 to the end of the road and then went through an allowed gate opening.  At this point there was a sign that asked all who passed to stay on the next six mile trail to insure it would remain open.  Thanks to the local ATV Clubs, they have kept this six mile trail open. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.  However, it was also six miles of going about straight down on ridges that had just enough room for the two tracks of our atvs.  It was not a trail for the faint of heart.

On the way down we met a couple on horse back.  We also met two girls hiking.
They were kara from Seattle and Jill from St Louis.  The incredible thing was that they both grew up in Toulon and Quincy, Il both of which are not very far from Moline, Il.

Hell’s Canyon is a perfect name for that six miles as it seemed we were going to the center of the earth.  When we got within a few blocks of the Snake River we had to park our machines and walk to the river.  Aaron and AJ were smart enough to bring there swimming suits and I didn’t but figured no one will see me swimming anyway.

Much to our surprise when we got to the river, there were about 50 people there on jet boat rides and there was a historic site called the Kirkwood Ranch which was a settlement that originally had all supplies brought in by old log rafts or whatever.  Any how, lots of photos were taken when I jumped into the river without my suit on.

We came back up FR to FR 672 named Crooked Rd.  This name was not fitting.  It should have been called Really Really Crooked Road.  I know the handle bars on my atv were never straight for more than five seconds for the next hour or two.  We arrived at a connecting route called Deer Creek Rd which took us into White Bird.  We then followed old highway 95 into the town of Grangeville.  Unfortunately none of us were clever enough to have made a motel reservation and there was not one room left.  So for the next two hours we continued the ride north to Orifino, Idaho.  This was really different scenery as there were rolling meadows of wheat and what looked like mustard plants.

We went straight north with just small jogs to the east or west and put a lot of miles down by the end of the day.  I think we rode 140 miles that day. I know that doesn’t seem like much, but when you consider stopping to eat, putting in gas and taking a bunch of photos, it is hard to average over 25mph.  We stayed in a beautiful Best Western Motel along the
Clearwater River.  Aaron changed the name of our trip to atv with jim-always an adventure!
