July 7th which is really what we had on schedule for 8th but we are a day ahead until Sunday then back on schedule again. Well, we did a stroke of business today. Larry and I left Seeley Lake, Montana abut 9:30 and before the day was we arrived at Cascade, Montana at 4:15 and traveled 147 miles. The weather was about perfect compared to the last 9 days. Started out around 55 in the morning and stayed pretty much in the 70’s to low 90’s by the end of the day. We left Seeley Lake just on the north edge of town on a road called Morrell Creek Rd. It eventually turned into Wordworth Seeley Lake Rd. This took us around Cottonwood Lake and eventually we headed south on Monture Rd towards highway 200 and the town of Ovando. We rode the ditch along highway 200 until we got to Dry Gulch Rd and then headed northeast.. We could ride highway 200 if we wanted since we have license plates, but in keeping with the spirit of the ride, we wanted to stay off asphalt as much as possible. We took Dry Gulch Rd to Copper Lake Rd and then Huckleberry Pass Rd and then Beaver Creek Rd. town to Lincoln. At Lincoln we once again rode the ditch as the state had signs asking atv’s to ride in ditch on that part of road. We stayed in ditch for about 10 miles and then had to ride a few miles on the edge of highway 200 until we got to a turn off going southeast called Little Wolf Creek Rd. This road varies from a very narrow winding path to gravel that is one car wide. This was some very desolate country and we welcomed help from two loggers named Kevin and Sheyne. They happened to be in the right place and right time to help as I had just missed this very small opening off Wolf Creek Rd that actually was a continuation of the road, but you could not tell it by the path we followed for the next 10 miles. Finally, we hooked up with county road 434 and took it north to a dirt road called Dead Man Coulee Rd. We took this road northeast until we hit highway 287 and had to ride some asphalt and ditches for a few miles further north to a dirt road called Birdtail Rd. Then we took off on that and hooked up with Mission Rd and followed that dirt road for a gazillion miles. This hooked up with Simms Cascade Rd which ended up at Cascade. Met Rod there and drove to Great Falls for the night and rest the next day. We will be back on schedule by Sunday, but we split up rest days on Wed and Sat so we were ahead of schedule for a couple of days. That’s all for the
day. It was a huge relief to have temperatures that were decent.
The 95 to 100 degrees really made me tired especially with additional heat
coming off the atvs. I’m looking forward to getting Sunday and Monday
out of the way as those are going to be the two longest days of the trip
according to the GPS route I have planned. I’m sure some of the scenery
will also be less spectacular as we begin to leave the mountains.
The photos I’ve included tell some of the story, but not the incredible
first hand feeling you have experiencing the vastness of the area when
your out in meadows that are 20 miles wide and surrounding by mountains……
and the smell of the fresh air and pine trees.
