July 28, Friday Day 32 St Sault Marie to Sultan Today was great. We Left St Sault Marie about 10:40 in the morning and got to Sultan, Ontario around 5:45 that night. We traveled 152 miles. The roads were mostly gravel with an occasional strip of asphalt. You are allowed to ride on the asphalt as long as the traffic count is 5,000 cars or less per day. Well we tried to stay in the wide ditches along any asphalt, but it wasn’t really necessary as the car count was most likely about 5,000 cars per year. We were lucky that we left on Friday afternoon as there are a lot of logging trucks, but everyone told us they make their last run around noon on Friday and then quit for the weekend. There were numerous beautiful spots to stop and take photos of lakes and rivers along these gravel roads. We noticed a home made card board sign that was for a birthday party down the road. We encountered four more signs for about 20 miles or 30 klicks as they would say up here. When we got to the 5th sign, there were numerous people sitting next to a cabin and there were a few atvs parked. So we stopped and had a great conversation. We met Ed, Jen, Sam, Penny, Al, Rose and Devin. They were waiting for their daughter to arrive and were cooking a pig over the spit. As you can see from the photo, it was going to be a great meal and they did ask us to stay and visit and eat, but unfortunately we did not have enough time to do that and arrive at Sultan for the night. So we visited, exchanged names and gave them some of the coveted atvwithjim.com stickers for their Arctic Cats. As I’ve said before, one of the best parts of this trip is meeting people from all walks of life and most are in very small towns or camping, fishing, atving etc. Next we stopped at Air-Dale fly in service and visited with the golden retriever for a bit. No one was at the office or in any of the cabins, so we left a card and took a few from them. The cabins looked great and I suspect this would be a great place to stay. The golden was a typical lousy watch dog for their species. He barked once, then came running and wanted to be petted and have sticks tossed in the water so he could prove he really was a retriever. I tossed him a few and then we took off for Sultan. When we arrived in this very small village, we stopped at Patricias bait and tackle. It’s the photos of the building with the sign ice cream and worms on the front. Ed and Pat Malec own the place and they were joined by the daughter from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She was on a holiday and visiting her parents. Her name is Carol and she ran off with a bear hunter a few years ago and now comes home to visit from time to time. They gave us directions to the post office which is run by Michelle. She and Dean also run a bear hunting service and they rented us a great cabin on the lake. The water wasn’t hooked up yet, but it didn’t matter. The cabin was clean, the refrigerator worked to cool our beer and I had a Yukon Jack , sat on the dock and listened to the loons on the lake. She served us Lasagna right on our own picnic table and the next morning Dean cooked us breakfast. If you’re ever in need for a place to stay and guide service for bear hunting, these are the folks to call. Very friendly and easy going. We fell asleep that
night with lots of good memories of the people we had visited. I
got up a few times in the night and walked outside to see if the northern
lights were acting up, but no luck Maybe tomorrow night! See
Ya.
