July 29th Saturday Day 33 Sultan to Quebec by Lorrainville. This started and ended as a great day. The temperatures were cool and it even rained lightly a couple of times, but that was ok. We left Sultan around 9:45 and ended up getting to the Quebec border at 6:00. Since you are not allowed to ride on the highways in Quebec, we rode to the very border of the province and touched our front wheels a few inches over the border and then headed back to New Liskeard, Ontario for the night. The motels were full, but we found this great cabin on a large lake between Liskeard and Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Quebec. The price was right and we once again were able to sit on the shores and listen to loons and count a zillion stars. There was even a Countryfest jamboree going on about five miles across the lake so we could actually hear the music and then we were able to watch a fireworks display. Pretty awesome night. But, back to my day. The first we encountered in the morning was Josh and he can roll barrels for about 40 miles without falling off. I ask him if I could try it (as a joke of course), and he said I weighed too much for the fiberglass barrels, so he goes to a storage garage and whips out a 55 gallon metal oil drum for me to use. Well, I had to do some fast talking to get out of that deal. We waved goodbye and once again thanked Dean and Michelle for their hospitality. We ran into Moe at the Watershed Restaurant at a intersection and when we filled up the truck with diesel we remembered we had not held up the sign for day 33 so Moe helped us with that and sent us on our way. Next we ran into a great group of folks from Sudbury, Ontario. They were camping along Duncan Lake. They were all friends or relatives. They were Eddie, Mike, John, Hayley, Hennessey, Rane, Dorothy, Georgie, Rita, Janice and Kuddles the dog. I took photos of all of us, but my favorite is of little Hennessey and me. It seems that 900 students and parents in the town of Sudbury agreed to shave their heads for a fund raiser for the cancer society. Hennessey raised the most money of anyone in town. She collected $700. With that smile I’m sure she should get into the professional fund raising business. It’s people like Hennessey and others in their town that renew your faith in man kind. They were all a great group to talk with and of course they offered us food. We visited as long as we could and Jon tried to steal Kuddles the dog, but he didn’t get away with it. Next, we ate lunch in Gowganda at Emily’s fish and chip shop. It was excellent and I would recommend stopping at that restaurant when your in town. Then we headed to Elk Lake and were almost run town by a town full of crazed lawn mower riders. We caught them as they were crossing the bridge with some dude running behind them carrying golf clubs. Actually, all of them had golf clubs. So here’s the deal. They don’t have a golf course, but each year they have a charity event and golf for 27 holes. They have tees in backyards, on an island in the lake and in the middle of downtown. Everyone gets to the island tee off in pontoon boats. They even have an attempt for a hole in one. It’s a 12’ swimming pool floating in the lake. This year first place is an almost new Oldsmobile. They have 360 golfers for this years’ event with 40 on the waiting list. It’s called the Urban Golf Classic and it’s on August 18th and 19th. It’s a kind of friendly competition for a very serious golf outing in New Liskeard called the Frog Classic. We posed for lots of photos and traded t-shirts and hats for our atvwithjim stickers. I know we came out ahead on that deal. As I said earlier,
we finally arrived at the Quebec border at 6:00 and by my PGS, we touched
our front wheels into Quebec by about one foot. It was another very
memorable day, meeting wonderful, friendly people with hearts of gold.
I’m starting to think that rural America is really where it’s at!
See Ya
