Day 38

August 3rd, Thursday day 38 Mcdowel to Mont-Saint Michel

Maruice and I left this little wide spot in the road and headed for Mont-Saint Michel at 8:00 in the morning.  We ended up riding approximately 140 miles for the day and arrived at our destination around 5:00 that night.

Rod was sitting in the town square just kind of wondering if we would ever show up.  He was not worried as he knew I have a very good sense of direction and eventually would end up exactly where I was supposed to be.

This day of riding consisted of some trails and some very good forest roads.  In this part of the country you can ride on forest roads if you don’t mind sharing them with a few hundred logging trucks(true).

Here’s the deal on these roads.  Some of them are so bumpy, a Sherman tank would not be able to use them, but a Canadian logging truck is a different matter.  See they have two trailers behind them and around 80 wheels.  They also like to add a few thousand extra logs for additional ballast or weight.  This allows them to travel safely at somewhere between 60 and 70 miles an hour down a bumpy wash board gravel dirt road.  It’s quite a concept and does seem to work.  However, it is not a lot of fun when they are heading your way and you can see rocks flying off the wheels heading towards your body.  I found it was best to just put your head down and take all of the rocks in your chest and arms instead of your face.  It works great!

We did meat some good people today and I forgot there were one or two yesterday.  I have included photos of them on both days.  One guy came out of a narrow path in the woods and was pulling a trailer behind his atv.  He invited us down to his camp in the woods and showed us around.  It was way cool and he even found a way to have running water in a sink.  There was a stream with some rapids running right by his place.  So he put a hose in the stream and attached a funnel to the end of the hose.  Instant water pressure in the sink.  What a concept.

So we finally arrived at our destination and Rod was sitting in the town square right where he said he would be.  Upon arriving I realized I had made a gross mistake on time allotted to travel Quebec.  See most states and provinces have a map scale of 1 inch to about 5 or 10 miles.  What I failed to realize is that Quebec has a scale of 1 inch to two light years!!!!  I knew I could not make it to Maine in one more day and those good folks were going to be waiting for me at the border at 10:00 Saturday morning.  So I made the decision to drive the next day as I knew Maine had put a lot of work into a schedule for me, including meeting the governor.  Next time I will allow 10 days for Quebec or take a different route and not go so far north.

That’s it for the day,  See Ya tomorrow which will be a day of driving in preparation for entering Maine.
